Time in the “third kingdom of nature”

This collection of essays aims is to present the early history of the intersections between palaeontology, palaeoanthropology, and philosophy at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to interpret the broader correlations of different disciplines with respect to their view of time and methodologies, namely their relations to evolutionary theories as well as the philosophy of history and teleology. The German, British, and Hungarian authors of the altogether eleven essays take those traditions in research as their starting point, which consider either the non-disciplinary aspects of the early history of palaeontology and palaeoanthropology or the impact of the natural historical approach gaining ground as opposed to different taxonomies. The authors, instead of the history of particular disciplines, follow a conceptual historical approach to grasp the notion of real time thematised by the geosciences and its philosophical aspects.
